The 14th Pakistan Mountain Festival, organized by Devcom-Pakistan to commemorate International Mountain Day, began with a cleanup drive on Margalla Hills Trail-5. Over 100 university students participated, showcasing their dedication to preserving mountain ecosystems and raising awareness about natural resource conservation.
Observed annually on December 11, International Mountain Day was established by the United Nations to underscore the importance of mountain ecosystems, which cover 22% of Earth’s land and provide critical resources, including freshwater for half the global population.
Devcom-Pakistan’s Executive Director, Munir Ahmed, emphasized the global significance of mountains, calling them “life-support systems” for millions. He highlighted the festival’s role in fostering conservation awareness through diverse activities such as cultural performances, cleanups, exhibitions, and youth forums. Ahmed also commended the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) for its efforts to protect the Margalla Hills National Park.
Rina Saeed Khan, Chairperson of IWMB, stressed the importance of Margalla Hills for Islamabad’s growing population. “These hills are vital for biodiversity and ecological services like water retention, flood prevention, and climate regulation. Their preservation is crucial for the city’s sustainability,” she stated.
Creative Director Riffat Ara Baig announced upcoming events, including live painting competitions, cultural exhibitions, and the prestigious Pakistan Mountains Pride Awards. She lauded IWMB’s efforts under Rina Saeed Khan’s leadership, noting significant improvements in wildlife conservation, trail maintenance, and visitor facilities within the Margalla Hills National Park.
