19 Killed as African Country Chad’s Security Forces Thwart Presidential Palace Attack
In a dramatic turn of events, an armed attack on the presidential palace in Central African Country Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, was thwarted by security forces. The confrontation left 19 people dead, including 18 assailants and one security officer, while six others sustained injuries. According to security sources, the assault occurred around 7:45 PM local time when armed individuals attempted to breach the presidential complex. Witnesses reported hearing intense gunfire and spotting tanks patrolling the streets during the incident.
Security forces acted swiftly, neutralizing the attackers and preventing further escalation. The government confirmed the attack, stating that the situation was now under control.
Chadian authorities labeled the incident an orchestrated attempt to destabilize the nation. President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno reassured citizens, emphasizing that the threat had been effectively contained.
The attack comes amid strained relations between Chad and France. On November 28, Chad announced the termination of its security and defense cooperation agreement with France. Following this decision, French troops began withdrawing from the country on December 10, with a complete exit scheduled by January 31, 2025.
