Trump Unveils $540 Billion ‘Golden Dome’ Missile Defense System, Appoints Space Force General to Lead
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
President Donald Trump has launched an ambitious new national security initiative dubbed the “Golden Dome” missile defense system, a sprawling project aimed at protecting the United States from global and space-based threats. The multi-decade program is projected to cost more than $540 billion and will be led by U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein.
Speaking from the Oval Office on Tuesday alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump announced the plan’s initial funding of $25 billion, approved by congressional Republicans. Trump also revealed that Canada had expressed interest in joining the effort, potentially expanding the scope of the initiative beyond U.S. borders.
“Once completed, the Golden Dome will intercept missiles from anywhere on Earth—even from space—ending the missile threat to the American homeland once and for all,” said Trump.
While Trump hinted that the total cost may be closer to $175 billion, the Congressional Budget Office estimates the program could exceed $540 billion over two decades.
General Michael Guetlein, currently the Vice Chief of Space Operations, has been appointed to oversee the system’s development. Widely respected within the Pentagon, Guetlein is known for his expertise in missile defense and procurement strategy. His leadership is expected to accelerate the integration of advanced technologies and partnerships with private defense contractors.
