At least 27 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday when Israeli forces opened fire near a food aid distribution point in north-west Rafah, Gaza, marking the third such deadly incident in as many days, according to Gaza health officials.
The Gaza Civil Defence reported that Israeli tanks and drones fired at thousands of civilians gathered near the al-Alam roundabout in the al-Mawasi area at dawn. The crowd had assembled to receive food from a site operated by an Israeli-backed aid group. Health authorities in Gaza confirmed the deaths, while Hamas-linked media also carried the reports.
This is the same location where over 30 people were killed by Israeli fire on Sunday. Repeated strikes at aid distribution points have further worsened the humanitarian crisis in the besieged Palestinian territory.
In a rare admission, the Israeli military confirmed that troops had fired on individuals who were approaching their positions. The military referred to them as “suspects,” but did not clarify whether they posed a threat or were armed.
This is the first time Israeli forces have publicly acknowledged firing at civilians near food aid centers during the ongoing Gaza conflict, intensifying scrutiny over the rules of engagement being applied.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the attacks on food-seeking civilians as “unconscionable.” He warned that targeting civilians is a serious breach of international law. “Such actions could constitute war crimes,” Türk stated, highlighting the increasing danger to humanitarian aid operations in Gaza.
The Gaza Strip continues to face a deepening humanitarian emergency as access to essential supplies remains severely restricted. Aid agencies report growing difficulties in delivering food, water, and medical assistance amid ongoing hostilities.
International organizations are calling for immediate ceasefires around aid corridors to prevent further civilian casualties and ensure uninterrupted humanitarian access.
