59-year-old Tourist Rescuing Grandchild Trampled to Death by Elephant While in South Africa
A tragic incident unfolded at Kruger National Park when a 59-year-old tourist lost his life after being trampled by an elephant while reportedly attempting to save his grandchild.
According to a statement from South African National Parks (SANParks), the victim, identified as Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed from eMkhondo, Mpumalanga province, was visiting the park with his family. The accident occurred near the Malelane reception area close to Crocodile River on January 25.
Eyewitnesses report that children in the group had run past a bridge into the bush when an elephant from a nearby herd suddenly charged. Ammed rushed to assist his grandchild, but one of the elephants pursued and fatally trampled him. Park officials confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Following the incident, SANParks stated that the elephant responsible could not be identified, as multiple animals were present in the vicinity and quickly moved away. Authorities are now investigating the case, with South African Police handling the official report.
SANParks expressed deep condolences to the Ammed family, urging the public to refrain from speculation until the investigation is complete. “This is a deeply unfortunate event, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family during this difficult time,” the statement read.
Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest wildlife reserves, is home to thousands of elephants. Park authorities continuously emphasize the importance of maintaining a safe distance from wild animals and adhering to visitor safety guidelines.
