PARATEBUENO, COLOMBIA — A magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit central Colombia on Sunday, rattling communities in the Paratebueno region and damaging local infrastructure, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

Emergency teams were dispatched to assess damage in the town of Santa Cecilia, where cracked asphalt and other structural issues were reported. Authorities confirmed that, despite the strength of the quake, there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities.

Local emergency teams and police were quickly deployed to affected areas. In images captured shortly after the tremor, officers were seen assessing road damage and securing the scene in Paratebueno.

Officials have advised residents in the affected zones to remain alert for potential aftershocks and to follow guidance from national disaster response teams.

Colombia lies within the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, where frequent tectonic movements lead to occasional strong earthquakes. The country has experienced several moderate to strong quakes in recent decades, prompting ongoing investments in early warning systems and emergency preparedness.

The Colombian Geological Service is working alongside GFZ experts to continue seismic monitoring and damage evaluation.

Despite localized damage, no major disruptions to public services or transportation have been reported. Authorities remain on high alert while structural inspections continue across affected areas.

Residents have been urged to report any signs of damage or instability in buildings and infrastructure to local officials.
