IAEA Adopts Resolution Against Iran, Condemns Lack of Cooperation

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has adopted a resolution criticizing Iran for its lack of cooperation, following intense discussions among member states. The resolution, introduced by the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany, highlights concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities.

The resolution received the support of 19 member states. However, three countries—China, Russia, and Burkina Faso—voted against it, while 12 others abstained, choosing not to align with either side.

The resolution emphasizes the importance of ensuring Iran’s nuclear program remains entirely peaceful. It underlines the need for continued oversight by the IAEA to verify compliance with nuclear agreements and prevent potential breaches of international commitments.

Western nations, including the U.S., UK, and France, expressed concerns about Iran’s lack of transparency, calling for stronger measures to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Vienna, Ambassador Mikhail Ulyanov, criticized the resolution on social media, describing the late-night vote as biased and counterproductive.

The resolution comes amid growing suspicions that Iran is advancing its nuclear weapons program. This move follows a similar condemnation earlier this year, in June 2024, when the IAEA’s 35-member board raised alarms over Tehran’s lack of cooperation.

While this resolution underscores global efforts to curb nuclear weapons development, it may further strain relations between Iran and the international community. Analysts warn that Tehran’s response to the resolution could escalate tensions in an already volatile region.
