Mikaela Shiffrin’s journey to her 100th World Cup victory faced an unexpected hurdle on Saturday when the skiing legend crashed during the giant slalom event at the Stifel Killington Cup.
Leading after her first run, the 29-year-old skier appeared poised to make history but lost her footing during her second descent, slamming into the safety barriers.
Shiffrin, visibly shaken and in discomfort, was transported off the course by sled for medical evaluation. US Ski and Snowboard later reported she was “being evaluated” and shared a hopeful note: “She asked about her splits.”
If cleared to compete, Shiffrin could still chase her milestone win in Sunday’s slalom event.
Shiffrin, who claimed her 99th World Cup victory in Austria last week, remains focused despite the setback. Reflecting on her achievements, she previously noted the difficulty of maintaining elite performance: “It’s not easy, and everybody’s pushing and catching up. I’m not taking that for granted.”
The record-setting skier remains an icon in alpine skiing, known for her resilience and determination.
Fans can tune in to watch Shiffrin’s potential comeback on Sunday. The decisive second slalom run begins at 1 p.m. ET, airing live on NBC Sports and Peacock.
As the skiing world holds its breath, Shiffrin’s grit and talent will once again take center stage in her bid to reach the century mark.
