China has issued a sharp rebuke to the United States over its approval of a $385 million arms sale to Taiwan, warning of strong retaliatory measures to protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement released Sunday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned the deal, accusing the US of undermining the one-China principle and violating the commitments outlined in the three China-US joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique of 1982.
The ministry called on Washington to halt its arms shipments and to stop encouraging Taiwan’s military buildup. The sale, Beijing stated, sends a “gravely wrong signal” to pro-independence factions in Taiwan and poses a threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
“Such actions are a blatant infringement of China’s sovereignty and security interests and constitute a severe breach of international law,” said a ministry spokesperson. The decision comes amid heightened tensions between the two global powers. Beijing argued that the arms deal is inconsistent with repeated US assurances of not supporting Taiwanese independence, further straining already delicate diplomatic relations.
China has lodged a formal protest with the US, urging it to reconsider its actions to avoid deeper damage to bilateral ties and regional stability.
The statement concluded with a resolute warning: China will take “necessary and firm countermeasures” in response to the sale, though specifics were not disclosed.
