Nandi-Ndaitwah has made history as Namibia’s first female president, securing 57% of the vote in the recent presidential election. At 72, she brings decades of political experience to the role, representing the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO).
Nandi-Ndaitwah stepped into the vice-presidency in February following the death of President Hage Geingob. Having served as deputy prime minister and held key ministerial positions, she promised a focus on peace and stability in her acceptance speech, crediting Namibians for their trust and commitment to progress.
The election, however, has been marred by opposition challenges. Alleging irregularities such as technical issues and ballot shortages, opposition parties have rejected the results. The voting process, extended due to logistical delays, led to long lines, with some voters waiting up to 12 hours on the first day.
Opposition leaders have called the extension illegal and announced plans to contest the outcome in court. Reports indicate their candidate garnered 25.5% of the votes, significantly trailing Nandi-Ndaitwah.
