Syrian state television has confirmed the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule, announcing the victory of the “Great Revolution” that has brought an era of authoritarian governance to a dramatic close.
A statement broadcast on state TV declared, “The Great Revolution has triumphed, and the Assad regime has been toppled.”
Opposition factions reported on Sunday that they had successfully taken control of Damascus. In an official statement, they proclaimed, “We thank God for the liberation of Damascus and the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. All prisoners have been released.”
The announcement came after reports surfaced of clashes within the capital. Armed groups entered Damascus, facing minimal resistance as government forces retreated.
