The UK, Italy, and Japan have officially launched a joint venture to create a next-generation supersonic fighter jet, set to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon by 2035. The initiative, known as the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), brings together key players from the three nations: BAE Systems from the UK, Leonardo from Italy, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co Ltd (JAIEC).
The new venture will see each company holding a 33.3 percent stake. JAIEC, supported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies, will contribute to the ambitious program to develop a sixth-generation stealth fighter. The aircraft is expected to enter service by 2035 and remain operational until 2070.
Charles Woodburn, Chief Executive of BAE Systems, highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating, “This agreement is the result of months of collaboration, bringing together the expertise of all parties involved to drive the development of an advanced, cutting-edge combat air system.”
The GCAP project, first established in 2022, will see the new company formed by mid-2025, overseeing the design and development of the aircraft. Manufacturing and final assembly will be contracted to BAE Systems, Leonardo, MHI, and other key suppliers.
