Pakistan has dismissed criticism from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union regarding the sentencing of individuals involved in the May 9 incidents through military courts. The Foreign Office asserted that Pakistan’s judicial system adheres to international agreements and human rights standards.
In a strongly worded statement, the Foreign Office reaffirmed the country’s commitment to international human rights obligations, emphasizing that Pakistan’s legal framework includes safeguards for fair trials and judicial review through higher courts.
Washington expressed deep concern over the military court verdicts, with the U.S. State Department calling them inconsistent with the principles of justice. The department urged Pakistan to adhere to fair trial standards and ensure due process.
The European Union also issued a critical statement, labeling the trial of civilians in military courts as a violation of international conventions. The EU called on Pakistan to protect the fundamental rights of its citizens and uphold fair trial guarantees.
The UK Foreign Office echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the lack of transparency and independent scrutiny in military court proceedings. London questioned the fairness of such trials, suggesting they undermine basic principles of justice and human rights.
In response, Pakistan firmly defended its legal process. The Foreign Office emphasized that the military court trials were conducted in accordance with laws passed by the parliament and in line with international legal practices.
“Our legal system includes provisions to ensure accountability and uphold human rights. These measures are fully compliant with global standards,” the spokesperson stated.
Pakistan also urged international stakeholders to respect its judicial sovereignty and refrain from undermining its efforts to ensure security and justice following the unprecedented May 9 violence.
The Foreign Office concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s resolve to balance its domestic legal requirements with its international obligations, asserting that justice and rule of law remain paramount.
