Austria has announced plans to purchase 12 Italian-made M-346 FA fighter jets to replace its decommissioned Saab 105 aircraft, which were retired at the end of 2020. The decision marks a significant step in modernizing the country’s air fleet.
A letter of intent is set to be signed between Austria and Italy’s Defense Ministry, according to local media reports. The aircraft, manufactured by Italy’s Leonardo, will serve multiple roles, including pilot training, air defense, and ground force support.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer emphasized the collaborative nature of the deal, highlighting the role of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in facilitating the agreement.
“My special thanks go to Prime Minister Meloni for her key contributions to this partnership,” Nehammer said.
Approximately €1 billion ($1.04 billion) has been earmarked for the purchase. Negotiations are ongoing with the Italian government, with further details on delivery timelines yet to be disclosed. The acquisition underscores Austria’s focus on bolstering its defense capabilities amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
The M-346 FA jets are advanced multi-role aircraft designed for flexibility, featuring capabilities for training, air-to-air combat, and ground attack. They are expected to fill critical gaps in Austria’s defense infrastructure following the retirement of its older fleet.
