North Korea has carried out its first ballistic missile test of 2025, firing the missile towards the East Sea, South Korea’s military confirmed on Saturday.
The missile test occurred as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited South Korea to discuss regional security and alliance strategies. Blinken swiftly condemned the launch, labeling it a “reckless provocation” undermining regional peace.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that surveillance efforts have been heightened, with both South Korea and its allies closely monitoring Pyongyang’s actions.
This test comes amid continued tensions over North Korea’s weapons programs and global calls for denuclearization. Analysts suggest the timing of the test may be a calculated signal to Washington and Seoul as they strengthen their defense cooperation.
