Swiss National Accused Imprisonment of Spying Dies by Suicide in Iranian Prison
A Swiss citizen, who had been detained in Iran on charges of espionage, has reportedly died by suicide in Semnan prison, according to Iranian judiciary news outlet Mizan Online.
The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, was under investigation for espionage after his arrest in Iran. The chief justice of Semnan province confirmed that all evidence and documents from the prison where the man was held indicated that his death was a suicide.
Mizan Online reported that the Swiss citizen was being held in the prison while his case was under review. On the morning of his death, he had asked his cellmate to bring food from the prison buffet. Authorities stated that he took advantage of a moment when he was alone in the cell to end his life.
Prison officials attempted to revive him, but despite their efforts, he was declared dead.
Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) acknowledged the death, and the Swiss Embassy in Tehran has since been in contact with Iranian authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
