President Zelensky submitted proposal to parliament for extension of martial law additional 90 days.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has submitted a proposal to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, requesting an extension of martial law and the general mobilization period for an additional 90 days. If approved, the measures will be extended starting February 8, 2025, at 5:30 a.m. local time (0330 GMT).
Martial law, first introduced on February 24, 2022, shortly after Russia’s large-scale invasion, grants the Ukrainian government expanded powers to ensure national security and sustain its defense capabilities. These measures include restrictions on civilian activities, heightened military oversight, and prioritized allocation of resources for the ongoing conflict.
The general mobilization, initiated alongside martial law, enables the conscription of eligible citizens to bolster Ukraine’s military ranks. The continued extension of these measures highlights the ongoing security challenges and Ukraine’s commitment to maintaining its defensive posture against Russian aggression.
President Zelenskyy’s administration has consistently renewed these provisions as the conflict persists, reflecting their critical role in Ukraine’s strategy to protect sovereignty and resist external threats.
The proposal awaits parliamentary approval, which is expected given the current wartime conditions and the parliament’s prior support for similar measures. Once passed, the extension will ensure the uninterrupted implementation of martial law and mobilization, critical for addressing the complexities of the ongoing conflict.
As the situation evolves, Ukraine remains steadfast in its efforts to defend its territory while navigating the extensive impacts of the prolonged war. Further updates on the legislative process are anticipated in the coming weeks.
