United Nations Calls for Israeli Army’s Withdrawal from Lebanon
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Israeli forces to withdraw from Lebanese territory within the timeframe set by the ceasefire agreement.
Speaking at a press conference in Beirut, Guterres stated, “The ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel is fragile but still holding. I appeal to all parties and stakeholders to implement and uphold the ceasefire conditions.”
He emphasized that Israeli forces must complete their withdrawal within the ceasefire period, while simultaneously deploying Lebanese forces in the southern region.
The ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel came into effect on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 4:00 AM local time.
According to the second clause of the agreement, the Lebanese government is responsible for preventing Hezbollah and other armed groups from launching operations against Israel. In return, Israel has agreed to refrain from carrying out military actions—whether by land, sea, or air—against civilian, military, or governmental targets in Lebanon.
Under the deal, the Lebanese army is to be gradually deployed in Israeli-occupied southern areas within 60 days.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces have continued violations through airstrikes and destruction of homes, raising concerns about the agreement’s long-term stability.
