Historic CPA Conference Begins at Punjab Assembly

The first-ever Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference for Asia and Southeast Asia has commenced at the Punjab Assembly, marking a significant milestone in regional parliamentary collaboration.

This two-day conference brings together over 100 parliamentary representatives from 20 countries, including Sri Lanka, Maldives, the United Kingdom, Zambia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Among the attendees are 13 Speakers, 4 Deputy Speakers, and a Committee Chairman, highlighting the event’s international significance.

The CPA Regional Secretariat Meeting will be chaired by Punjab Assembly Secretary Aamir Habib and CPA Regional Secretary Mrs. Kashani Anusha, finalizing the conference agenda. The discussions will revolve around parliamentary democracy, transparent legislation, and accountability.

The conference will be inaugurated by Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan, followed by the CPA Regional Executive Committee Meeting, co-chaired by Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan and Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne of Sri Lanka. The committee will discuss regional priorities and legislative cooperation.

A special documentary showcasing the Punjab Assembly’s role and achievements will also be presented.

Distinguished international speakers include:

• Dr. Christopher Khilila, Chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee, delivering opening remarks.
• Senator Pele Peter Tinggom from the Malaysian Parliament.
• Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis of Maldives, Ahmed Nazim.
• Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

The Chief Guest for the first day will be Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

A key session in the afternoon will focus on empowering women, youth, and minority groups through legislative reforms. This session will be addressed by UK House of Commons Deputy Speaker, Nusrat Ghani, Pakistani Senator Anusha Rahman, and other parliamentary members.

The day will conclude with a cultural evening, introducing delegates to Lahore’s rich heritage, followed by a grand dinner at Hazuri Bagh, hosted by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan.

This landmark conference serves as a testament to Pakistan’s growing role in regional parliamentary diplomacy and its commitment to strengthening democratic values across the Commonwealth.
