Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue and World Council of Churches Reaffirm Commitment to Global Peace

The Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue (DID) and the World Council of Churches (WCC) have reinforced their long-standing commitment to promoting interfaith cooperation and global peace. The two organizations convened in Rome from February 17 to 20, 2025, to assess ongoing initiatives and strategize future collaborations. The discussions also focused on preparations for the 50th anniversary of their partnership, set to be commemorated in 2027.

Strengthening Decades of Interfaith Collaboration

Since 1977, the DID and WCC have worked jointly to foster religious dialogue and understanding. Their cooperation has resulted in the publication of significant interfaith documents, including:

  • Interreligious Prayer (1994)
  • Reflection on Interreligious Marriage (1997)
  • Multi-Religious World of Christian Witness : Recommendations for Conduct (2011)
  • Multi-Religious World of Education for Peace : A Christian Perspective (2019)
  • Interreligious Solidarity Serving  (2020)

These publications have played a key role in shaping interreligious discourse and ethical guidelines for faith communities worldwide.

Dialogue as a Pillar of Global Stability

During the meeting, both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to interfaith dialogue as a means of promoting peace and social cohesion. Delegates emphasized the importance of religious communities in addressing conflicts, fostering tolerance, and strengthening humanitarian efforts.

“In an era of increasing global tensions, open and respectful dialogue remains essential,” the joint statement declared. “Faith-based organizations have a responsibility to build bridges, enhance mutual understanding, and contribute to a more peaceful world.”

Future Initiatives and the Road to 2027

The meeting concluded with a pledge to expand interfaith initiatives, strengthen cross-cultural partnerships, and advocate for global religious harmony. The DID and WCC expressed their enthusiasm for continued cooperation as they approach their milestone 50th anniversary in 2027.

A formal agenda outlining upcoming interreligious projects and engagement strategies is expected to be released later this year.
