Zelensky to US: No Peace Without Guarantees, No Apology
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s demand for an apology, following a heated exchange with President Donald Trump at the White House.
In an interview with Fox News, Zelensky stated that he is under no obligation to apologize to Trump, emphasizing that he has done nothing wrong. He acknowledged the importance of US support, saying, “I respect the president and the American people, and Ukraine cannot survive without their backing.”
Despite the recent diplomatic tensions, Zelensky expressed optimism about preserving US-Ukraine relations, calling it a “strong and historic partnership that goes beyond two presidents.” He urged Trump to take a more supportive stance in peace negotiations.
Zelensky also reiterated his willingness to sign a minerals trade agreement with the US as a first step toward broader security commitments. However, he made it clear that Ukraine would not enter peace talks with Russia without concrete guarantees against future aggression.
“Ukraine wants peace, but it must come from a position of strength,” he stressed, confirming that both Europe and the US would play a role in future negotiations.
His response follows a dramatic fallout with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, after which Zelensky posted on X: “Thank you, Mr. President, Congress, and the American people.”
