China Strikes Back: Imposes 10%-15% Tariffs on U.S. Goods Amid Escalating Trade Tensions
China has announced new retaliatory tariffs of 10% to 15% on a range of U.S. agricultural and food products, marking a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the two economic giants. In addition, Beijing has placed 25 U.S. companies under export and investment restrictions, signaling a firm response to the latest tariff measures imposed by President Donald Trump.
China’s Retaliatory Tariffs Target Key U.S. Sectors
The new tariffs primarily affect U.S. soybean, corn, wheat, and seafood exports, industries heavily reliant on Chinese demand. Experts believe the move could disrupt global agricultural trade flows, forcing China to diversify its import sources.
Liu Jinlu, an agricultural researcher at Guoyuan Futures in Beijing, noted that China’s 10% tariff on U.S. soybeans will increase costs and reduce imports from the U.S., prompting China to boost its purchases from Brazil and other South American nations. However, with Brazil’s soybean exports nearing capacity, the shift may lead to higher global soybean prices in the coming months.
