U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Trump’s Request to Maintain Freeze on Foreign Aid

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday denied former President Donald Trump’s request to keep billions of dollars in foreign aid frozen, marking a significant setback for his administration’s efforts to reshape U.S. international assistance policies.

Trump had sought to maintain the freeze on aid designated for Ukraine, Israel, and several other nations, arguing that the funds should be reassessed to prioritize domestic spending. His legal team contended that the executive branch had the authority to withhold or reallocate foreign aid based on national security interests.

However, the Supreme Court ruled against the request, upholding lower court decisions that deemed the freeze unconstitutional. The ruling reaffirmed that Congress holds the power to appropriate funds and that the executive branch cannot unilaterally block their disbursement without legislative approval.

Bipartisan Reaction and Global Implications

The decision has sparked mixed reactions. Congressional Democrats and some Republicans welcomed the ruling, emphasizing the importance of honoring international commitments. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the outcome, stating, “America’s credibility on the world stage depends on fulfilling our promises. This ruling ensures our allies receive the support they need.”

Conversely, Trump and his allies criticized the decision, arguing that unchecked foreign aid spending risks undermining domestic priorities. “We should be taking care of our own people first,” Trump said in a statement following the ruling.
