New IDF Chief Orders Review of October 7 Probes, Shuts Iran Directorate

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, hours after taking office, implemented significant operational changes, including a review of military probes into the October 7 Hamas attack, the closure of the IDF’s Iran Directorate, and the formation of a new tank brigade.

In his first meeting with the IDF General Staff Forum, Zamir emphasized that 2025 would be “a year of war,” focusing on Gaza and Iran, while reinforcing military achievements on multiple fronts. He also reaffirmed the commitment to bringing home hostages held by Hamas, calling it a “moral duty.” As a symbolic gesture, Zamir will keep photos of the hostages in his office until they are safely returned.

Additionally, the IDF will launch a new multi-year military strategy, with planning set to begin in the second half of 2025. These decisions mark a strategic shift under Zamir’s leadership as Israel continues its military operations.
