South Sudan General Among Dozens Killed in Attack on UN Helicopter

A high-ranking South Sudanese general was among dozens killed after a United Nations helicopter came under attack, escalating fears of renewed conflict in the volatile nation.

Deadly Strike on UN Aircraft

The attack occurred on Friday in an area plagued by clashes between government forces and armed factions.
The UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) confirmed the downing of its helicopter, which was on a humanitarian mission to deliver aid to displaced civilians.
Initial reports indicate at least 30 people were killed, including South Sudanese military officials, aid workers, and UN personnel.

President Kir Appeals for Calm

President Slava Kir condemned the attack and urged for restraint, warning that escalating violence could push South Sudan toward a full-blown conflict.
“This attack is an assault on peace and stability,” Kir said in a televised address. “We not allow to fall back into war.”
The government has vowed to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

Rising Tensions Amid Fragile Peace

South Sudan has struggled with ethnic tensions and power struggles since gaining independence in 2011.
The country’s fragile peace agreement, signed in 2018, has been repeatedly threatened by clashes between rival factions.
Analysts warn that this attack could reignite broader conflict, further destabilizing the region.

International Response

The United Nations and African Union have condemned the attack and called for immediate de-escalation.
Humanitarian agencies have suspended operations in parts of the country due to security concerns.
The UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis.
