Hezbollah’s Involvement in Syria’s Unrest: Key Figures Arrested
Syrian security forces have accused Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of fueling recent tensions in the coastal region of Latakia. Following three days of violent clashes between security forces and armed groups, authorities claim to have uncovered evidence of Hezbollah’s involvement.
Security official Sajid Al-Deek stated that Hezbollah and foreign elements have provided support to groups operating in the coastal areas. In a phone interview with Al Arabiya, he confirmed that certain factions within Syria, including remnants of the former government, received assistance from Hezbollah and external forces.
Public security forces have reportedly detained five senior figures linked to the former Assad regime. However, authorities have withheld their identities due to security concerns.
Situation Under Control
Al-Deek reassured that security has now been restored by 90%. He emphasized that authorities are in communication with key Alawite community leaders to facilitate the surrender of remaining militants and prevent further escalation.
Latakia’s Governor, Mohammad Othman, pointed to external forces attempting to incite rebellion by recruiting individuals for destabilization efforts. He stressed the importance of maintaining security and rejecting sectarian conflicts.
Heavy Casualties in Clashes
Since Thursday, violence has erupted across several Alawite-majority areas in Syria’s coastal regions. Sources from Al Arabiya report that over 700 security personnel and pro-government militants have been killed in the fighting, bringing the total death toll to more than 1,018, including 273 members of the security forces.
