Trump Optimistic About Russian Agreement on Ukraine Ceasefire
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Tuesday regarding Russia’s potential approval of a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, following Kyiv’s agreement to the proposal during recent diplomatic discussions with American officials.
Speaking at the White House, Trump emphasized the significance of Ukraine’s commitment to halting hostilities, calling it a “major shift” from previous discussions. However, he acknowledged that the success of the ceasefire depends on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s cooperation.
“Ukraine has agreed to a total ceasefire, and now it’s up to Russia. We’re set to meet with them today and tomorrow, and hopefully, we’ll secure a deal. If Russia accepts, that’s great. If not, the conflict continues, and more lives will be lost,” Trump stated.
Upcoming U.S.-Russia Talks on Ceasefire
The U.S. administration has confirmed a high-level meeting with Russian officials to discuss the ceasefire framework. Trump also noted that he expects to have a direct conversation with Putin later this week, stating, “It takes two to tango.”
When asked if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would be invited back to Washington after their heated February meeting, Trump responded, “Absolutely.”
