Pope Francis Makes First Public Appearance After Five-Week Hospital Stay
Pope Francis made his first public appearance in over a month, greeting well-wishers from the balcony of Gemelli Hospital in Rome before being officially discharged on Sunday. His return marks a significant moment in his recovery journey, following a severe respiratory infection that led to prolonged medical care.
The 88-year-old pope, appearing visibly weakened yet determined, waved and smiled at the gathered crowd. Seated in his wheelchair, he briefly acknowledged a woman holding yellow flowers, responding with a soft yet heartfelt, “Brava!”
Despite his frail condition, the pontiff’s presence brought joy and relief to those who had been praying for his recovery.
After leaving the hospital, Pope Francis’ motorcade traveled through Rome’s streets, where crowds lined up to welcome him back. His first stop before returning to the Vatican was at St. Mary Major Basilica, where he traditionally prays after major journeys.
Medical experts at Gemelli Hospital confirmed that while the pope has overcome pneumonia, he is still recovering from a complex infection. His condition required intensive care after experiencing four severe respiratory crises, two of which were deemed life-threatening.
To ensure a full recovery, Pope Francis has been advised to avoid large gatherings and strenuous activities for at least two months. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the head of his medical team, emphasized the need for strict rest and monitored recuperation.
Supporters gathered outside the hospital, holding rosaries and banners, offering prayers for the pope’s strength and continued recovery. A nun was seen praying near the statue of Pope John Paul II, a testament to the deep spiritual bond between the Catholic community and its leader.
As Pope Francis returns to the Vatican, the global Catholic community continues to pray for his health, hoping he will soon resume his spiritual and leadership duties at full strength.
