Russian War Correspondent Killed in Mine Explosion Near Ukraine Border
Anna Prokofieva, a war correspondent for Russia’s state-run Channel One, was killed in a mine explosion while reporting near the Ukrainian border, the network confirmed on Wednesday.
The explosion took place in Russia’s Belgorod region, where Prokofieva and her crew were covering the conflict. The blast also injured cameraman Dmitry Volkov, according to Channel One.
The team encountered an enemy mine, resulting in this tragic incident,” the broadcaster stated.
At 35 years old, Prokofieva had been reporting on the Ukraine conflict for Channel One since 2023. Her last update on Telegram, posted a day before her death, showed her in a forest setting, dressed in military gear, and equipped with a head-mounted camera.
Her passing marks another casualty among journalists covering the war. Earlier this week, an Izvestia correspondent was also killed in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. According to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), at least 21 journalists have died since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
