Putin Proposes UN-Supervised Governance for Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed placing Ukraine under temporary external governance under United Nations supervision as part of a potential peace settlement. The proposal comes amid escalating military tensions and ongoing disputes over Ukraine’s leadership.

Putin reiterated his stance that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lacks legitimacy due to the absence of elections under martial law. He suggested that a UN-backed administration involving the United States, European nations, and Russia’s allies could oversee new elections and establish a government capable of negotiating a peace deal.

Zelenskyy rejected the proposal, calling it an attempt to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty. He accused Russia of prolonging the war to maintain control over occupied territories.

The statement follows a Paris summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, where Western leaders discussed deploying international troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force. Russia has warned that it will not accept NATO troops in any peace settlement.

Meanwhile, military tensions remain high. Despite a U.S.-brokered agreement to halt strikes on energy infrastructure, both sides have accused each other of violations. Ukraine reported 163 Russian drone attacks, while Russia claimed Ukrainian strikes on energy facilities in the Kursk and Bryansk regions.

On the battlefield, Russian forces continue to make slow territorial gains along the 620-mile frontline. Ukraine has responded with strategic operations in Russian border areas to prevent further advances.

The international response to Putin’s proposal remains skeptical, with Western leaders accusing Russia of delaying genuine peace talks. The situation continues to escalate, with no immediate resolution in sight.
