Russia Deploys North Korean Heavy Artillery to Crimea: ZDF Reports
Russia has begun transferring North Korean long-range artillery systems to occupied Crimea, potentially signaling an escalation in Pyongyang’s military role in the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to a report by German broadcaster ZDF.
Citing video footage from March 26, ZDF identified North Korean Koksan 170mm self-propelled guns being moved by train through northern Crimea. These powerful artillery systems are known for their extended range—capable of hitting targets up to 40 kilometers away with standard shells and up to 60 kilometers with rocket-assisted rounds.
Until now, North Korean troops were reported to be operating in Russia’s Kursk region, where they supported Moscow’s counteroffensive efforts. With Ukrainian forces recently retreating from that area, ZDF speculates that Russia may now deploy North Korean contingents to southern fronts, including Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
Beyond artillery, North Korea has provided Russia with a range of military equipment, including ballistic missiles, rocket launchers, and self-propelled artillery units. This growing cooperation follows a 2024 strategic defense pact signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, in which both nations pledged mutual military support.
