Israeli Airstrike Targets Journalists in Khan Yunis, Gaza
At least two journalists were killed, and several others were injured in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a tent housing journalists in Gaza’s southern city of Khan Yunis early on Monday. The airstrike struck the Palestine Today news agency’s tent near Al-Nasser Hospital.
Among the victims was Ahmad Mansour, a journalist who was filmed trapped under debris and burning. His colleagues attempted to rescue him, spraying water in an effort to extinguish the flames, but Mansour remains in critical condition.
Hilmi al-Faqawi and Youssef al-Khazindar were confirmed dead in the attack. Journalists Hassan Asleih, Ahmad al-Agha, Mahmoud Awad, Mohammad Fayeq, Abdullah al-Attar, and Majed Qudaih sustained injuries and have been transported to local hospitals for treatment.
In response, the Gaza Government Media Office issued a statement condemning the attack and calling for international bodies, including the International Federation of Journalists and the Federation of Arab Journalists, to condemn the killings of Palestinian journalists. The statement held Israel and its allies responsible for these crimes and called for legal action in international courts.
Since the outbreak of conflict in October 2023, Israel has been accused of systematically targeting journalists in Gaza. The number of journalists killed in Gaza has now surpassed 210, with Al Jazeera correspondent Hossam Shabat and Palestine Today journalist Mohammad Mansour among those killed in recent weeks.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) highlighted that nearly 70% of journalists killed globally in 2024 were victims of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, marking the deadliest year for journalists in history. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 1,335 Palestinians have been killed since the resumption of Israeli military operations on March 18, 2025.
