52 Killed and Nearly 2,000 Displaced in Gunmen Attacks in Nigeria’s Plateau State

At least 52 people have been killed, and nearly 2,000 others displaced following a series of brutal gunmen attacks across several villages in Plateau state, northern Nigeria. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the attacks on Monday, marking the deadliest outbreak of violence in the region since December 2023, when more than 100 people were killed.

The attacks, which occurred over several days in Bokkos, a district in Plateau state, targeted six villages. The motives behind the assaults remain unclear, although the region has previously been the site of violent clashes between farmers and herders. Despite this history, the current wave of attacks appears to be more widespread and organized.

In a statement released on Sunday, NEMA described the attacks as “brutal” and said that they had resulted in significant destruction of property. Over 1,820 people have been displaced, and three displacement camps have been set up to provide shelter for those affected by the violence.

As tensions continue to rise, the Nigerian presidency has announced that President Bola Tinubu has ordered security forces to track down the perpetrators. The government has vowed that the attackers will face “severe punishment” for their actions.

The security situation in Plateau state remains volatile, and authorities are on high alert as they work to prevent further violence in the region.
