China Responds to US Tariff Threats: Criticizes ‘Unilateralism’ and ‘Economic Bullying’

The Chinese Embassy in the United States issued a firm response today to President Donald Trump’s threat of imposing 50% tariffs on Chinese goods, labeling the move as “unilateralism” and “economic bullying.” Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu made clear that pressuring China is not an appropriate way to engage, reinforcing Beijing’s commitment to defending its “legitimate rights and interests.”

In a statement sent to CNN, Liu emphasized that such tariff measures prioritize America’s interests while undermining global trade norms. The spokesperson described the proposed tariffs as an effort to serve U.S. self-interest at the expense of international rules, arguing that these actions reflect a protectionist stance that harms broader economic cooperation.

The dispute comes amid escalating tensions between the world’s two largest economies. President Trump’s recent comments about imposing tariffs are seen as a direct response to China’s retaliatory duties introduced last week, further intensifying the ongoing trade war that has already had significant implications for global markets.

China has consistently opposed such economic measures, arguing that they violate the principles of free trade and international law. Liu’s statement reiterates China’s firm stance on safeguarding its economic interests while urging for constructive dialogue rather than confrontation.

As the trade conflict deepens, both nations remain locked in a cycle of retaliation, with fears mounting over the potential long-term impact on global trade and economic stability.
