The Embassy of Pakistan in Cuba marked Pakistan Day with a grand reception in Havana, celebrating over 70 years of diplomatic friendship between Pakistan and Cuba. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Shahzad Malik emphasized the strength of bilateral relations and extended heartfelt appreciation for Cuba’s humanitarian support following Pakistan’s 2005 earthquake.

The ceremony drew a large gathering, including Cuban Minister of Domestic Trade Betsy Diaz Velazquez and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Elio Rodriguez Perdomo, along with members of Cuba’s diplomatic corps, government officials, and international guests.

Tribute to Cuban Solidarity and Medical Cooperation

Ambassador Malik praised Cuba’s timely assistance in 2005, recalling the deployment of Cuban medical brigades to Pakistan during one of the country’s most challenging natural disasters. He also highlighted the generous initiative by former Cuban President Fidel Castro, who granted medical scholarships to Pakistani students in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“Cuba’s compassion during the 2005 earthquake stands as a shining example of humanitarian solidarity and friendship,” said Ambassador Malik.

Cultural Exchange and Student Participation

The evening opened with the national anthems of Pakistan and Cuba, performed by Pakistani medical students currently enrolled in Cuban universities. Attendees were treated to a short documentary film showcasing Pakistan’s cultural and historical heritage, followed by traditional dance performances by the students.

A photographic exhibition featured highlights of Pakistan-Cuba relations, including archival images of Cuban medical teams in Pakistan and snapshots from various high-level bilateral visits.

Showcasing Pakistan’s Culture and Heritage

Guests enjoyed a variety of Pakistani culinary specialties, offering a taste of the country’s rich and diverse food culture. The event reflected Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to strengthening cultural diplomacy and people-to-people ties with Cuba.

In addition to celebrating Pakistan’s national day, the event underscored a mutual desire to deepen cooperation in areas such as education, health, and cultural exchange, reinforcing the spirit of friendship between the two nations.
