Lahore Designated as “ECO Capital of Tourism” for 2027

 

Pakistan and Punjab have earned a significant global recognition with Lahore being named the “ECO Capital of Tourism” for 2027. The announcement starting on April 13, 2025. The delegation will officially designate Lahore as the “ECO Capital of Tourism,” highlighting the city’s rich cultural, historical, and tourism heritage.

Lahore, with its deep historical and cultural significance, has been selected for this honor, reflecting the city’s importance as a cultural hub within the region. The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) comprises 10 member countries, including Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Each year, one city from the member states is awarded the title of “ECO Capital of Tourism,” recognizing its contribution to regional tourism and cultural promotion.

Prior to Lahore, Uzbekistan’s city of Samarkand received the honor, while Turkey’s Erzurum was named the “ECO Capital of Tourism” for 2025. Lahore’s selection for this title underscores the city’s vital role in showcasing the region’s diverse heritage and tourist potential.

The ECO delegation, led by diplomats and ambassadors from member states, will be visiting Lahore to commemorate this prestigious occasion. During their visit, they will explore the city’s iconic attractions, including the Walled City, historical sites, and cultural landmarks. The delegation will also witness the annual “Meela Chiraghaan” festival, a cultural celebration that reflects Lahore’s vibrant heritage.

The event will culminate in a formal meeting of the ECO Permanent Representatives’ Council at the Civil Secretariat in Lahore, hosted by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. During the meeting, the council will discuss various regional and international matters of mutual interest.

Punjab Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb expressed her enthusiasm over the honor, stating that Lahore’s designation as the “ECO Capital of Tourism” is a major step in promoting Pakistan’s historical, cultural, and national heritage globally. She emphasized that this recognition will play a crucial role in enhancing tourism in the province, while also showcasing Lahore’s significance as a cultural and historical destination.

This designation will not only boost Lahore’s profile internationally but also attract more visitors, fostering economic growth through tourism. Lahore’s rich legacy and cultural offerings make it a perfect candidate for this prestigious title, contributing significantly to Pakistan’s image on the world stage.
