US Hands Over Mumbai Attack Mastermind Tahawwar Rana to India
Tahawwar Hussain Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani descent, has been officially handed over to Indian authorities after being extradited from the United States. Rana is accused of being deeply involved in the planning and coordination of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that resulted in the deaths of 166 people.
The extradition took place on a special flight, and Rana will soon face legal proceedings at the Patiala House Court in New Delhi, where he will answer to charges linked to his alleged support for the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist group.
Extradition Process and US Decision
This move follows a decision in February 2025, when US authorities approved the transfer of Rana to India. Donald Trump’s administration had previously declared the extradition of Rana after a prolonged legal process, as part of broader efforts to strengthen international cooperation against terrorism.
Role in the 2008 Mumbai Attacks
The Indian government maintains that Rana, along with David Headley, played a crucial role in the coordination of the Mumbai attacks. Headley, a key figure involved in the planning, had earlier testified that Rana provided significant assistance to the terrorist group responsible for the attack, Lashkar-e-Taiba.
