More than 100 international students have had their legal immigration statuses revoked, according to recent reports. These students were notified that either their visas were canceled or their records were terminated in the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

University officials confirmed that 27 students each from the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Arlington were impacted. 10 students from the University of Texas. Other affected universities include Texas A&M, UT Dallas, Texas Woman’s University, UT Rio Grande Valley, and Texas Tech.

Immigration attorneys expressed concern over the implications of SEVIS removal. Students removed from the system are no longer authorized to study or stay in the U.S. without reinstatement, a process that is often legally complex and time-sensitive. Legal experts also highlighted that the termination affects dependent family members, including spouses and children, who rely on the student’s valid status.

This surge in visa issues aligns with broader federal enforcement actions that have intensified since the beginning of the year. Reports suggest that many students removed from SEVIS were allegedly linked to pro-Palestinian protests or penalized for minor infractions, such as traffic violations.

Adding to the controversy, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently announced a policy to screen international students’ social media accounts for content categorized as antisemitic. This move has triggered concerns among civil rights advocates and educational institutions over privacy rights and freedom of speech.

Universities and immigration lawyers are urging affected students to seek immediate legal assistance and are calling for clearer guidelines to prevent abrupt academic disruptions for international scholars.
