ICJ Considers Sudan’s Accusation Against UAE Over Genocide Complicity in Darfur

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has begun reviewing a case submitted by Sudan, accusing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of supporting genocide through military aid to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) involved in Sudan’s ongoing civil war. Sudan’s legal representatives allege that arms supplied by the UAE have been used in targeted violence, particularly against the Masalit community in Darfur.

Sudan is seeking immediate intervention from the ICJ, demanding that the UAE stop any form of support to the RSF and provide compensation for the victims. The UAE has firmly denied the allegations, calling the accusations politically motivated and unsupported by credible evidence.

UAE officials argue that the ICJ lacks jurisdiction over the case due to a legal reservation made when it joined the Genocide Convention. They also rejected claims of involvement in arms transfers and highlighted their diplomatic efforts toward peace in the region.

The ICJ is expected to deliver a decision on its jurisdiction in the coming weeks. The outcome could have major implications for international accountability in conflict zones.
