Israel dismisses IDF officer after airstrike in Rafah kills 15 aid workers, admits ‘errors’ in operation
Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the dismissal of a senior officer following a deadly airstrike in the southern Gaza city of Rafah that resulted in the deaths of 15 humanitarian aid workers. The military acknowledged “operational errors” in the targeting process that led to the tragedy.
In a rare public admission, the IDF stated that the strike, carried out last week, was intended to target a suspected militant cell. However, it resulted in civilian casualties, including members of international relief teams who were coordinating food and medical aid deliveries in Rafah.
“Accountability Required,” Says IDF Chief
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi confirmed that the investigation revealed intelligence and procedural failures. “We recognize the gravity of what happened. Errors were made in identifying the target. As a result, innocent lives were lost,” he said in a press briefing. “We have relieved the officer responsible from his duties.”
The IDF also stated that two other officers involved in the operation have been formally reprimanded and further disciplinary action is under review.
Global Reaction and Humanitarian Outcry
The airstrike has drawn sharp criticism from international human rights organizations and United Nations officials, many of whom have called for greater protection for aid workers in conflict zones. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) condemned the attack, urging Israel to take stronger steps to safeguard humanitarian personnel.
Governments across Europe and the Middle East have also called for an independent investigation into the incident.
Growing Concern Over Rafah Operations
The city of Rafah has been a focal point of Israeli military operations in southern Gaza, where ongoing conflict has displaced tens of thousands of civilians. Aid organizations warn that repeated strikes in civilian zones are making relief efforts nearly impossible and risking more lives.
Despite the IDF’s admission and dismissal of personnel, rights groups continue to demand transparent accountability and the enforcement of international humanitarian laws.
