Pope Francis Returns to Public Eye with Easter Blessing from Pope mobile

Pope Francis made a heartfelt return to public life on Easter Sunday, delivering his traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing to thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, marking his first major appearance since recovering from a serious illness.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who recently spent five weeks in hospital battling double pneumonia, appeared visibly weak but determined as he greeted worshippers from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. He was later driven through the cheering crowd in the pope mobile, warmly interacting with pilgrims, blessing infants, and offering gestures of goodwill.

“Brothers and sisters, Happy Easter!” the Pope declared to the message to an aide. His annual Easter message included prayers for peace in Ukraine and Gaza, and a strong call for the release of prisoners of war and political detainees.

“May the Risen Christ grant peace to war-torn Ukraine and inspire efforts towards a just resolution,” the message read, calling on global leaders to work toward lasting peace.

Despite skipping Good Friday and Holy Saturday services due to health concerns, the Pope made a symbolic appearance to commemorate the Catholic Church’s most sacred day, showcasing his ongoing commitment despite physical limitations.

The Easter Mass, traditionally led by the Pope, was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Comastri, reflecting the Vatican’s cautious approach to the Pontiff’s recovery.
