Bluesky Launches Blue Checkmarks for Verified Users Amid Rising Social Media Trust Concerns
Report By Safarti Tarjuman Tech. Desk
Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform and rising competitor to X (formerly Twitter), has introduced blue checkmarks for verified users, aiming to enhance trust and authenticity across its growing network.
The company announced the feature in an official blog post, stating that it will proactively verify notable and authentic accounts and display blue check badges next to verified usernames.
“Trust is everything,” the Bluesky team emphasized. “We want users to know exactly who they’re interacting with.”
The move signals a return to traditional identity verification, a feature once central to Twitter’s user experience before Elon Musk’s acquisition in 2022. After rebranding the platform to X, Musk shifted blue checkmarks to a paid subscription model, sparking criticism and confusion among users.
Bluesky’s verification system not only includes manual authentication but also builds upon its existing model that allows individuals and organizations to verify themselves using custom domain handles. Over 270,000 accounts currently use domain-based authentication, the company reported.
The platform, which now boasts more than 30 million users, was originally launched as a side project in 2019 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. His vision was to create a decentralized alternative to traditional social networks, granting users more control over data and moderation.
“Social media hasn’t always given us the tools to know who we can trust,” said Bluesky. “Our goal is to fix that.”
As part of its verification rollout, the platform will initially assign blue checkmarks to “trusted verifiers” and plans to open a formal request system in the near future.
Bluesky COO Rose Wang described 2025 as a breakthrough year for the platform.
The introduction of verified blue checks could solidify Bluesky’s position as a credible, user-focused alternative in an evolving and competitive social media landscape.
