UN Urges India, Pakistan to Show Restraint Amid Rising Kashmir Tensions

The United Nations has called on India and Pakistan to exercise “maximum restraint” as diplomatic and military tensions escalate following a deadly attack in the disputed Kashmir region that left 26 civilians dead.

The appeal from the UN comes as both nuclear-armed neighbors exchange sharp rhetoric and retaliatory measures after Tuesday’s massacre near the scenic town of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir. Indian authorities swiftly labeled the incident a terrorist attack with “cross-border links,” accusing Pakistan of sponsoring the perpetrators.

Pakistan has vehemently denied the allegation, asserting it has no involvement in the attack, which was claimed by a previously unknown group calling itself the Kashmir Resistance, according to reports by the Associated Press.

UN Calls for Dialogue, Peaceful Resolution

In a statement released Friday, the United Nations urged both sides to avoid further escalation.

“We call on India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and to ensure that the situation does not deteriorate any further,” the UN stated.

The organization emphasized that all outstanding disputes between the two countries should be settled through peaceful, meaningful dialogue and mutual engagement, rather than confrontation.

Kashmir: A Flashpoint Reignited

The attack marked the worst violence in years in Kashmir, a region gripped by conflict for over three decades. The Himalayan territory remains divided between India and Pakistan, with both countries claiming it in full.

India attributes all forms of militancy in Kashmir to Pakistan-based groups, while Pakistan insists that the uprising is a legitimate struggle for self-determination by the Kashmiri people.
