U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, held a high-level meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday, just hours after the killing of Russian Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik in a car bombing outside the capital.

The talks, which lasted over three hours, centered on efforts to revive stalled negotiations between Russia and Ukraine amid escalating hostilities. The Kremlin described the dialogue as “constructive,” noting that both sides discussed the possibility of renewed direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

The meeting followed the assassination of Lt. Gen. Moskalik, a senior Russian military official involved in operations in eastern Ukraine.

President Trump’s administration has recently intensified efforts to push for a negotiated end to the war. In previous remarks, Trump emphasized the need for urgent peace, reiterating his stance that “Crimea will stay with Russia,” signaling a potential policy shift aimed at facilitating a resolution.

Sources indicate that the U.S. delegation discussed the easing of certain sanctions in exchange for a ceasefire and diplomatic progress. However, European allies remain cautious, warning against concessions that may undermine Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

The U.S.-Russia dialogue in Moscow highlights a new phase of diplomatic engagement but also reflects the heightened risk of instability, especially after the killing of a high-ranking Russian general during such a sensitive period.

The situation remains fluid as international stakeholders monitor the developments closely. Further announcements regarding the outcome of the Trump-Putin meeting are expected in the coming days.
