French Leaders Condemn Mosque Stabbing Attack in Southern France
Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
French politicians have strongly condemned a brutal stabbing attack that killed a worshipper inside a mosque in southern France, sparking widespread outrage and calls for unity against religious hatred.
The victim, identified as Aboubakar, was fatally stabbed while praying at a mosque in the town of Alès on Friday. Disturbing footage of the incident was circulated on Snapchat, fueling anger across the country.
President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with the Muslim community and the victim’s family.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau traveled to Alès on Sunday, meeting with local religious leaders and authorities. Speaking to BFM TV, Retailleau revealed that the suspect had previously voiced anti-Muslim sentiments and expressed intentions to harm others. “There is clearly a fascination with violence,” he said.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect has been identified but remains at large. Investigators questioned the suspect’s brother on Saturday as part of the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement agencies are continuing efforts to locate and apprehend the attacker.
In memory of the victim, a peaceful march was held on Sunday afternoon in the nearby town of La Grand-Combe. Later in the evening, a major demonstration against Islamophobia was organized at Place de la République in Paris, drawing hundreds of participants holding signs demanding justice and action against religious hatred.
One protestor’s sign read, “Justice for Aboubakar, Islamophobia kills,” symbolizing the grief and frustration felt by many.
France, home to Europe’s largest Muslim population — over six million people — has long grappled with balancing its principle of laïcité (secularism) with growing concerns about racism and religious discrimination. Muslims represent approximately 10% of the national population.
