Wildfires Encircle Jerusalem, Israel Cancellation of Independence Day Ceremony
Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
Widespread wildfires erupted around Jerusalem on Tuesday, prompting emergency evacuations and forcing the Israeli government to cancel its annual Independence Day torch-lighting ceremony, a highly symbolic national event traditionally held on Mount Herzl.
In a rare move, authorities aired a pre-recorded rehearsal of the ceremony instead of the live event. The cancellation, confirmed by government officials late Tuesday evening, marks the first time in decades that the celebration was called off due to a natural disaster.
Multiple fire fronts, fueled by unseasonably dry conditions and high winds, spread rapidly through forests and hills surrounding the capital, prompting urgent firefighting efforts and widespread concern for public safety. Fire and Rescue Services reported that dozens of firefighting units, supported by aircraft, were battling to contain the flames near residential zones.
“This is an unprecedented emergency. Our priority is saving lives and protecting communities,” said Jerusalem Fire District Commander Eli Cohen.
Several neighborhoods on the city’s outskirts were evacuated as a precaution. Authorities urged residents to stay indoors, avoid fire zones, and follow official instructions via emergency alert systems.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports, responsible for organizing the Independence Day ceremony, expressed regret over the cancellation, stating that the decision was made to ensure public safety and allocate resources to the ongoing emergency.
“While the torch-lighting ceremony is a cherished tradition, the current crisis demands our full attention,” a ministry spokesperson said.
The fires have raised concerns about infrastructure damage and environmental loss. Officials are investigating potential causes, though early reports suggest the blazes may have been sparked by a combination of dry vegetation and wind-driven embers.
President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited emergency command centers and praised the efforts of first responders.
A national investigation is expected to follow once the fires are contained.
