United States Finalizes New Russia Sanctions Package Amid Ongoing Ukraine Talks
Report By Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
The United States has prepared a new round of sanctions targeting key sectors of the Russian economy, including the energy, banking, and natural resources industries, as part of efforts to maintain diplomatic pressure during ongoing negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, according to a Reuters report.
Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the sanctions under consideration include major state-controlled entities, notably Russian energy giant Gazprom. The proposed measures signal Washington’s intent to expand its economic pressure campaign if the conflict resolution process does not advance. However, final approval from President Donald Trump remains pending, and it is unclear whether he will authorize the full package.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier emphasized that the administration had withheld new sanctions to avoid disrupting sensitive diplomatic efforts related to Ukraine. During an April 24 press interaction, President Trump stated he would likely decide on further punitive steps within a week.
The development comes as Western allies continue to weigh economic and strategic tools to influence Russia’s posture while avoiding setbacks in peace initiatives. Sanctions against high-profile sectors such as energy and finance could significantly increase the pressure on Moscow but may also complicate the fragile negotiation landscape.
