US Supreme Court Allows Ban on Transgender Troops to Take Effect
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
The United States Supreme Court has allowed the Trump-era ban on transgender individuals serving in the military to go into effect, following a decision that revealed a clear ideological divide among the justices. The 5–4 ruling permits the Department of Defense to enforce restrictions on transgender service members while ongoing legal challenges proceed through lower courts.
The court’s conservative majority voted in favor of lifting lower court injunctions that had blocked the ban, effectively reviving the policy that bars most transgender individuals from enlisting or serving openly. The three liberal justices—Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, and Sonia Sotomayor—dissented from the decision, voicing strong opposition to the reinstated restrictions.
The policy, initially announced by then-President Donald Trump via social media in 2017, sparked immediate backlash from civil rights groups and advocacy organizations. Legal battles followed, with several federal courts issuing rulings to halt its implementation. Despite those challenges, the Supreme Court’s decision now allows the government to enforce the controversial measure as the litigation continues.
