Hamas has agreed to release Edan Alexander, a U.S.-Israeli dual citizen believed to be the last American held captive in Gaza, as part of a new diplomatic initiative tied to ceasefire efforts and humanitarian access.

Alexander, a New Jersey native serving in the Israel Defense Forces, was abducted during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault that resulted in the capture of around 250 individuals. His release is now part of what Hamas describes as steps toward “opening border crossings, delivering aid, and achieving a ceasefire.”

Khalil al-Hayya, head of Hamas’ negotiation team, confirmed the decision on Sunday, though no update was provided regarding Alexander’s health.

U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, confirmed the agreement and announced he is en route to Israel to facilitate Alexander’s transfer. “We expect to bring him home as early as tomorrow,” Witkoff told NBC News, crediting a complex, multi-party negotiation process. He described the release as a goodwill gesture toward President Donald Trump.

“The family is overjoyed,” said Witkoff. “This is a significant moment, made possible in large part due to President Trump’s engagement.”

Alexander’s parents, Adi and Yael, expressed relief in a statement via the Hostage Family Forum, confirming they are in continuous communication with U.S. officials regarding the process.

Hamas had initially indicated in March that Alexander would be released along with the remains of four other dual nationals. That promise fell through, with the group later attributing the delay to disrupted communication caused by Israeli operations.
