Afghanistan Bans Chess Citing ‘Religious Considerations’ Under Taliban Rule

The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan has officially imposed an indefinite ban on the game of chess, citing “religious considerations” and guidance from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, according to local reports from Khaama Press.

Authorities have announced the closure of the Afghan Chess Federation and the cancellation of all chess-related events across the country. The decision was confirmed by Afghanistan’s Ministry of Sports, aligning with policies enforced by the Taliban regime since their return to power.

The ban comes amid growing interest in chess among Afghan youth. Just days prior to the announcement, a group of chess enthusiasts and community activists had appealed to the government for financial support to develop the sport further in the country.

However, officials said the sport conflicts with certain interpretations of Islamic principles, prompting its prohibition.

Since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, numerous sports and cultural activities have faced new limitations, especially those considered inconsistent with the group’s strict religious ideology.
